Art & culture has always been an international sector, if only because national characteristics develop most effectively when brought into contact with external movements and influences. Not surprisingly, cultural institutions tend to be keen on addressing international audiences and presenting themselves in a true teatrum mundi. Their success in doing so depends, at least in part, on the quality of the publicity they use to support their international ambitions.
To translators, art & culture is a special sector in that it tends to require more creative writing skills than other fields. That is not to say that all texts associated with culture require artistic talent on the part of the translator. More than anything else, translations in this category are best served by a clear and unambiguous style.
