Over the past month, a translation team at Metamorfose Vertalingen produced the English translation of the 2015 Annual Report of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. This recurring translation project is among the largest that we carry out over the course of the year.
Projects of this scale demand the deployment of an expert translation team, especially because of the strict deadlines and relatively short time available for the translation. The translation process is just one of the many different processes involved in the realisation of the annual report, which requires input from many different parties. Metamorfose is very much aware of this and makes every effort to deliver its translations punctually so as to prevent delays in subsequent phases (which include the processing of final changes, lay-out and publication).
The use of a translation team also demands safeguards in terms of coordination and consistency. During the translation process, our translators use a shared automated translation memory for Schiphol as well as a Schiphol-specific online terminology database. This ensures that even when four or five translators are working simultaneously, their translation choices are always consistent.
In addition to expert translators, projects of this calibre call for effective project management to ensure strict coordination of the translation process. The project managers see to it that the various chapters of the annual report are submitted to the right translators, manage reference material and feedback, monitor deadlines and facilitate consultation between the translators and the client.
To guarantee a high-quality end product – a professional and lucid translation that is consistent with previous annual reports and is supplied within the short time frame required by the client – far-reaching automation is indispensable. We have linked our translation software to Schiphol’s automated version management system to make sure that, in addition to providing high-quality translations, we can process changes to the source text in real time. In other words, we have synchronised the translation process with the version management of the Dutch source, allowing us to start the translation long before the source text is final.
